Lessons Learned from Building Houses in Guatemala

I had already been there for almost a week, but it felt much less. The last day was Friday, and since we were nearly finished we thought we would have a party in honor of the family. We brought balloons and a piñata filled with all kinds of candy. Like my grandparents, cousin, and I walked in we were greeted by the founder, Joe Collins.
Our summer volunteers spend one week building cinderblock homes for families in desperate need of a stable house. Volunteers spend the entire week working alongside the families receiving the homes. It takes about 7 to 10 days to build a house for a family. Normally the volunteers help with the construction of the house from day one. The completion of the house and the subsequent ceremonial key handover to the family is for most volunteers a very emotional experience and a very special moment.

On a Saturday afternoon in February, Israel Vaíl, a forty-eight-year-old father of two, was cleaning up a construction site in his yard, on the outskirts of a town called Cajolá.
It was back in 2009 when the rescue and custody center for wild animals in Bolivia was founded as an NGO. A Swiss animal lover created this wonderful animal welfare project on a 45 hectar protected nature reserve in the middle of a very varied tropical landscape. Wild animals find ideal conditions for a secure life in the primeval forests, swamps and savannahs. The nature reserve has extensive, species-appropriate animal facilities, where the freed wild animals have a second chance for a better life.

There is a lot to do, and every helping hand is important. She just spent Christmas break in Honduras and is talking about returning in May for a month and living there in the future. There were actually two pieces of property on the sale. One is the sqft lakefront plot where the house is, and the new room is being built. This plot is for us to live on and where I plan on starting a small guest house next year. The other piece of property is a 90 acres land that is on the other side of the road, about 200 yards from the shore of the lake.

Our relationships with our participants in Guatemala and Egypt is built on a strong foundation of friendship. An inexperienced builder is simply a man trying to earn a living. In similar fashion, an organization started with good intentions but poor infrastructure is but a group of humanitarians who come together for a common purpose. Longevity, credibility and generational benefit to the participants requires a solid organizational foundation.

Factors that are contributing to this endangerment include pollution, poaching, and low hatchling survival rates. At the Matapalo Conservation, volunteers are key to the preservation of the sea turtle species native to Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Using education as a bridge to social change
They were two girls from America and Ireland, who were very enthusiastic about it too. The building, which was relatively small, had three rooms/offices where people were on their computers. Outside, they had three trucks and a motorcycle parked on the street, which was to take us up the hill. Flocks of people crowded the small sidewalks, dodging the rain under the blue and black tarps of roadside vendors. Soon we reached the outskirts of the city, and more of the lively forests showed.
All the kids loved it and every time someone played a card, they would scream BS with enthusiasm. Eventually, they would have all the cards in their hand, but they didn’t care. They had huge grins on their little faces as if they were trying to show me how many teeth they had. I don’t know who came up with the idea, but somehow we decided to play BS, the card game. (I don’t know if you are familiar with the game, but basically, you play cards face down, and if people think you are lying then they say BS.
I’m sure it does feel like you’re spending tons of money but it’s nice that their not checks for $3,000/each and only for amounts in the $100s. Some people say Guatemala is just like its asteroid, with two main extinct volcanoes and one extinct one. Includes our food costs, quite high at the beginning to stock the pantry, bed sheets, a deep freezer, blender, electricity, gas for the car and for cooking, going out and travel. Building a house without a concrete mixer, heavy excavation equipment, proper tools or even gloves is a job that is not for the faint of heart. Most men living in the rural villages would claim that they have “construction experience.” So now, do I. A typical house is made of cornstalk walls, a dirt floor and a scrap material roof. Arriving at their home in a shack in the middle of I’m-not-sure-where in the city, I couldn’t breathe. The mom and her two young children welcomed us in. There was only a small twin bed and the bathroom was outside. I looked into those young children’s eyes and the mom so concerned for her little ones and the tears in my young friend’s eye and I knew the whisper was real. The town was similar to Antigua with its cobblestone streets and lime plastered buildings, but you could tell the difference immediately. Our participants gain freedom, dignity and security, allowing them to live to their full potential.

The courtyard, with its old overgrown stone walls which we soon found out to be beautiful in the morning, was spooky, and confusing in the night. We began work pretty soon, and we also found out that a number of workers already started on Friday to lay the groundwork and measure. I was put on wire duty, in which I had to cut steel rebar to secure the concrete. After many turns and cutbacks, we had reached the current home of the Mixtun family. The road leading up to it was a dirt road, and surrounding it lay rows and rows of corn in which you could almost get lost in.
